Steve McClaren believes Frank Lampard is producing "some of the best form of his career" after handing the Chelsea midfielder a recall for tomorrow's friendly international with Austria.
Lampard lost his place for the four autumn Euro 2008 qualifiers with Russia (twice), Israel and Estonia through a combination of injury and then the form of Aston Villa skipper Gareth Barry.
But Lampard has been in sparkling form for the Blues in recent weeks and has been reunited with Steven Gerrard in the centre of the park against the Austrians.
McClaren said: "Gareth Barry, in the last three games, has performed excellently. Frank Lampard was unlucky to be out of the side.
"He was our best player before that and has come back and has shown great form and played some of the best football of his career for Chelsea in recent weeks.
"His form has been a revelation and he has really looked sharp.
"Barry will come on against Austria and show what he can do again but with England you can't include everyone and are always leaving out very good players."
As expected, McClaren has awarded a first cap to goalkeeper Scott Carson who has impressed this season while on loan to Aston Villa from Liverpool.
Carson will gain valuable international experience in a match where there is nothing but pride at stake in place of Paul Robinson.
McClaren said: "Scott Carson has been around the squad for a long time. He came with us in the summer and then went onto the Under-21 Championships and did ever so well in that.
"His performances for Aston Villa have been very good and I've said all along this game against Austria would be an ideal opportunity for him to experience international football."
McClaren is giving no clues as to whether Carson would remain in the side for Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia at Wembley if he performs well in Vienna.
He would only say: "I know my goalkeeper for Wednesday and, when that game comes around, we will all know who it is."
David Beckham will win his 98th cap despite his recent lack of football after missing the last four European qualifiers because of his knee problem.
McClaren also tends to use the friendly to survey other aspects of his side and will also blood Ashley Young and David Bentley during the second half.
He said: "It is a friendly. We are looking at things tomorrow night, different personnel. Some players need fitness, I'm looking for a bit of cohesion, especially with the back four.
"We have got to look at Sol Campbell and Joleon Lescott and the effectiveness of them because they are going to be important against Croatia, and David Beckham needs to improve his fitness.
"This team is not necessarily the team which will play against Croatia at Wembley and that includes the midfield."
