Frank Lampard believes Chelsea must rediscover the qualities that earned them two consecutive titles to win the Premier League again.
The Stamford Bridge club finished six points behind the Red Devils last season and Sir Alex Ferguson has signalled his attacking intentions by adding the likes of Carlos Tevez, Nani and Anderson to his squad as well as Lampard's fellow England midfielder Owen Hargreaves.
Chelsea have endured a close season where winger Arjen Robben and forward Michael Ballack have been constantly linked with Real Madrid while a lengthy injury list is headed by England skipper John Terry and Didier Drogba who both have knee injuries.
However, Lampard insists the Blues must return to what carried them to emphatic titles in the previous two seasons.
Lampard told Nuts Magazine: "We have to remember what won us the title the first two years. It was about quality play and team spirit and they came together as a whole.
"We kind of walked the league the first year, then it was a bit tougher but we won it comfortably, and then Man United have gone and won it.
"You see the emergence of Liverpool as well and you can't discount Arsenal. Then there's a group of teams below that. It's got to make you even more determined."
Chelsea face rivals Liverpool and Manchester United before the end of September and the 29-year-old admits it is vital they start the campaign well.
"Everyone will be focused. We're all winners from top to bottom and we all want to fight together, make no mistake. Everyone knows that. We'll be focused. What we want is a good start to the season - which will be tough - and move on from there, and play with confidence."
Lampard also heaped praise on manager Jose Mourinho and owner Roman Abramovich, whose relationship has at times been fractious.
"What Jose Mourinho has done in winning the titles that he's won, and bringing the best out of players like myself, is brilliant.
"So we need to remember those things and come back stronger. We've got the squad to win the title back, without a doubt.
"Roman has moved the club on a million miles from where it was and no-one should forget that. He's been fantastic.
"He's given us the opportunity to fight and to be upset about finishing second, which was unthinkable a few years ago."
