The 34-year-old former France international, who is in his second season with Bastia, equalled Jean-Luc Ettori's mark of 602 games when featuring in a 2-0 win over Evian on Sunday.

Landreau is now set to go past Ettori, who kept goal for Monaco, by starting Wednesday's Corsican derby against Ajaccio.

Having made his first Ligue 1 appearance at Bastia's Stade Armand-Cesari, for Nantes in October 1996, Landreau was in the perfect place to reflect on his achievement.

He told UEFA’s official website: "When I played my first game here, I would never have imagined I'd still be here today. The game is so demanding, so hard, but here we are."

Landreau's longevity was recognised by Nantes fans, who held up a banner in the keeper's honour during their match at Guingamp.

"I saw that on TV," Landreau added. "I was very touched. So many memories of those days with Nantes came back to me.

"And it was not easy to take it in because we had a game to prepare for. But we won without conceding, so now I can enjoy the moment."

Landreau earned 11 caps for France and has claimed two league titles in his career – with Nantes in 2001 and Lille in 2011 – as well as three Coupe de France medals.
