PROMISING Australian goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak made his first start of the season for Borussia Dortmund keeping a clean sheet in their 2-0 DFB-Pokal victory over Dynamo Dresden on Tuesday.
In a vote of confidence from Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp, Langerak was the only change to the BVB side which defeated FC Koln 5-0 in the Bundesliga on the weekend, replacing Roman Weidenfeller.
And the Australian keeper did well to prevent efforts from Mickael Pote on seven minutes and David Solga on 20 minutes.
Robert Lewandowski put Dortmund ahead from a corner on 30 minutes, before Mario Gotze sealed the result in the second-half on 65 minutes.
Langerak, making just his second appearance for Dortmund's first team, kept his first ever clean sheet for the side.
Klopp had said prior the game: “Mitch has earned his deployment since he has already held up well (in his debut against Bayern last season) and in training has become ever better.”
Elsewhere in the second round of Germany's DFB-Pokal, Mathew Leckie returned for Borussia Moenchengladbach after a thigh injury as they got past Heidenheim 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw.
Leckie came on as a 91st-minute substitute but didn't take a spotkick in the shootout.
Meanwhile, Robbie Kruse was an unused sub as Fortuna Dusseldorf eased past 1860 Munich 3-0.
In England's Carling Cup, Mile Jedinak was a 75th-minute substitute as Crystal Palace progressed to the quarter-finals after defeating Southampton 2-0.
In England's League One, James Wesolowski made it three goals in two matches with a double in Oldham's 3-3 draw with Preston North End.
With Oldham trailing 2-0, Wesolowski provided the assist for Shefki Kuqi to pull one back on 41 minutes, before the Australian diverted in David Mellor's free-kick.
Preston went ahead again, before Wesolowski stunning first-time long-range effort on 86 minutes earned his side a draw.
