Mitchell Langerak made a series of saves but it wasn't enough to prevent VfB Stuttgart bowed out of the German DFB-Pokal with a 2-0 loss to Borussia Moenchengladbach overnight.
After being beaten by Fabian Johnson's 31st minute strike, Langerak did well to prevent Tony Jantschke who pounced on a loose ball when in one-on-one.
Langerak appeared exposed before pulling off a diving save when Johnson played in Andre Hahn in the second half.
Hahn was in on goal again shortly after, but Langerak positioned himself well to save with his chest.
Elsewhere, Robbie Kruse made his first club appearance since August, getting through 74 minutes on the right flank as Bayer Leverkusen were knocked out.
Leverkusen drew 3-3 with Sportfreunde Lotte, before losing on penalties.
Mathew Leckie's Ingolstadt also exited on penalties against Eintacht Frankfurt, with the Aussie subbed off in the 120th minute prior to the shootout.
In the Dutch Cup, Kenny Dougall put in a full shift while Craig Goodwin was a 79th minute substitute as Sparta Rotterdam stunned PSV Eindhoven 3-1.
In the English League Cup, Bailey Wright played a full game as 10-man Preston North End were hammered 6-0 by Newcastle.
