W-LEAGUE WRAP: Roar Women and Central Coast Women lead the league and Sydney FC recorded their first win as round two played out this weekend.
Melbourne Victory Women hosted season one winners Roar Women in a top of the table clash in sunny Melbourne. It looked as though the teams were to share the spoils, with the scores locked at nil-nil in the final 10 minutes of the match before Ellen Beaumont's 83rd minute strike put the season one champions ahead.
Melbourne and Matildas goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri had proved a one-woman defensive wall for Melbourne, denying Roar repeatedly throughout the match, but Beaumont's late-match strike finally snuck the ball past her.
Further west, Perth Glory's Collette McCallum and Lisa de Vanna combined to score Perth's first goal of the season and post a win over the youthful Newcastle Jets. De Vanna troubled her defenders with her explosive pace and quick turns, but it was McCallum's pinpoint-accurate in-swinging corner which gave Perth the glory.
Her 10th-minute shot curved in at the near corner with Newcastle goalkeeper Alison Logue attempting to parry it in vain into the lurking de Vanna's back, before ending up entangled in the netting.
Sydney FC then got up over ACT rivals Canberra United in a thrilling three-goal match in the country's chilly capital. Striker Sarah Walsh gave Sydney the early lead in the 20th courtesy of a well placed through ball from Danish import Cathrin Paaske. Paaske then extended the lead with a goal of her own in the 83rd, after combining with fellow Dane Catherine Cannuli.
The second goal proved invaluable, with a 90th-minute strike by Ellie Brush clawing one back for the Canberrans. But stoic defence in final few minutes helped Sydney hold out last season's runners up.
Further up the road in New South Wales, Central Coast hosted Adelaide United, with two late goals by Trudy Camilleri and Ashleigh Connor securing the Central Coast the win and equal first on the ladder. Central Coast and Roar Women are undefeated after two rounds, with the two set to meet in Brisbane in round three.
In other matches next weekend, Adelaide take on Melbourne, Perth meet Canberra, and Newcastle take on Sydney FC in a local and ABC-broadcast derby.
