Reports from Yokohama have suggested Grella, who limped off after just 25 minutes of the final session on Tuesday, won't take his place in the team, while Chipperfield is still battling with a foot injury and is no certainty either.

Grella, a crucial part of the Socceroos line-up in his role as a defensive midfielder, has played just one match for Blackburn since returning from a long layoff through injury. He picked up a knock to the calf on Tuesday and it is doubtful whether he will be able to play against Japan.

That leaves Verbeek with the conundrum - whether to move Jason Culina back into a defensive position alongside Carl Valeri and find a replacement for Culina or whether to leave Culina where he is on the right of midfield and bring Mile Jedinak into the starting XI.

While insisting that Chipperfield was fit and ready when the Swiss-based defender arrived, Verbeek told reporters that he still hasn't decided on whether Chipperfield will start.

The experienced left-back would likely be given the role of minding Japan's playmaker Shinsuke Nakamura, should he play, but there are real concerns about his ability to play out a full 90 minutes given his limited game time since returning from a foot injury which saw him miss two months and cost him a move to Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin.

David Carney would be the logical choice to replace Chipperfield.

Meanwhile, Tim Cahill is likely to start as the lone striker in the 4-2-3-1 formation, with Brett Holman likely to slot into an attacking midfield position next to Mark Bresciano and Culina, should the Gold Coast-bound midfielder not be chosen to fill Grella's shoes.

Valeri should play, while the back four will most likely be Luke Wilkshire, Craig Moore, Lucas Neill and either Chipperfield or Carney.
