Ecuadorian midfielder Edison Mendez has angered PSV Eindhoven by failing to return from his winter break on time.
Mendez called the club's press chief Pedro Salazar to say that he would be late as his mother has only recently been released from hospital, but he did not ask for the club's permission.
"We are not happy about this," PSV director Jan Reker told AD Sportwereld. "This contradicts the agreements we made. We must wait for when he arrives. Maybe today, maybe tomorrow. I will not say anything about possible punishment."
Mendez, 29, said earlier this season that he wanted to leave PSV due to a poor working relationship with coach Huub Stevens.
Mendez has made 12 appearances for PSV this season.
