LAUNCESTON City FC have snapped up former Feyenoord Rotterdam and FC Utrecht goalkeeper, Jordy Van der Corput, for the 2014 Victory League season.
Van der Corput, joined City for a one-week trial in November and impressed new coach Kurt Reynolds who was quick to sign the experienced gloveman.
The 24-year-old Dutchman is the first signing of the 2013 off-season as Launceston City looks to rebuild for season two of the state-wide comp.
“Jordy (Van der Corput) has a strong presence on the park, excellent technique and is very professional in his approach and attitude,” Reynolds told the club’s website.
“We are delighted to have secured his services and the club is excited about the value and quality that he brings to the squad.”
Van der Corput is impressed with life in a new club and country.
“It is great to be here in Tasmania and I feel very welcome,” the shot-stopper said. “The club has been fantastic in hosting me and I am enjoying the football.
“Importantly, I understand and like the philosophy of the coach and the management team at Launceston City FC, it is quite similar to how I have learned the game in the Netherlands.”
After a thirteen years in the wilderness, state-wide football was relaunched in Tasmania this year but it was a less than auspicious start for City who picked up the wooden spoon in the eight-club league.
But Reynolds is aiming to make Van der Corput the first of many signings as the northern club looks to assert itself on the table in 2014.
“Jordy will help solidify our defensive unit and our young list will be able to gain valuable game knowledge that will hold them in good stead to improve as footballers,” Reynolds said.
“2013 was a disappointing season for the club and we don’t shy away from that, but it is clear to see that as a club we are working proactively to change our on-field fortunes.”
