Thomas had a front row ticket to the craziest show in A-League history when two own-goals and two deflected efforts saw Melbourne Victory defeat Sydney FC 3-2 in last weekend’s semi-final.

Much to the frustration of the Sky Blues, Thomas produced several stunning saves, earning him the Man of the Match award, with his performance helping Victory to a spot in Saturday’s decider.

Thomas feels that Melbourne are riding a wave of momentum and are confident of spoiling the Newcastle Jets' Grand Final celebrations in front of their home fans.

“We’re in a really, really good spot,” he told FourFourTwo.

“The final at home was a solid win and then to come to Sydney and get the win against a team that have been dominant in the last two years was great for our confidence and the team in general.

“Come game-day there is no underdog, there is no deserved winner. Whoever turns up and does best on the day will get the result.

“So, we’ll be going to Newcastle full of confidence and ready to go.”

In terms of his own performance in the win over Sydney, Thomas was overjoyed he could contribute to getting Victory into the A-League decider.

“It was nice to perform like that in front of my own family,” said the Sydney-raised shot stopper.

“I just felt really relaxed and in the game. I just took each moment as it came and tried not to get too carried away with the situation.

“It ended up being a really good night for the club and for me personally.”

After last weekend’s drama, it’s no surprise Thomas believes that one of the keys to success in the Grand Final is for Victory to tighten up their defence.

“Our back line needs to be strong,” he said. “Defensively we need to deal with the long balls that Newcastle play as they can be quite direct.

“When we have possession and turn it over, we need to be on the ball so that we don’t get done on the counter with the long ball, that’s probably the biggest one.” 

With Victory losing out on last season’s Grand Final via spot kicks, Thomas said that this weekend’s title decider is the perfect opportunity to lay some demons to rest.

“Last year there was quite a lot of heartbreak after going down to penalties,” he said. “So, it was special to go back to Sydney and get the job done.

“We’ve had a roller-coaster year, but we have stuck together. There was a lot of criticism of us this season and to be in the final now is massive, sspecially after last year’s disappointment.

"We’re a massive club with the best fans and best facilities, so it’s only right that we have the best results on the field.”
