The 25-year-old forward, who played in the Australia’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Iraq on Thursday, has become a key figure in the Bundesliga side.

The club’s sports director Thomas Linke told Kicker: "It's nice that we have long-term planning security in this position.

"Mathew Leckie was in the last two years a very important player for us, who always gave opponents a difficult task.

“We are convinced that Mathew this season will take a further step in his development and we will continue to have a reliable pillar in our attacking play.”

The former Adelaide United star signed a three-year deal with Ingolstadt in May 2014 and helped the club to promotion at the end of the 2014-15 season.

He has played 65 league appearances for the club, scoring ten goals, with seven assists. Die Schanzer finished 11th last season.

The Socceroos will face the UAE at Mohamed Bin Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, on Wednesday 1.30am (AEST).
