ADSELAIDE United's young gun flyer Matthew Leckie opens up to Reds blogger Stephen Daughtry about his amazing year and he just admits he likes “running at players...”
He's the latest wunderkind who has taken his chance and leapt to prominence not just in the A-League, but in the cut and thrust of the Asian Champions League.
People who love football love to watch the 19 year old. He exudes fearlessness and self-belief that he can back up with skill, goals and endurance.
442 - How are you enjoying the ACL?
ML - It's great. Obviously we're doing really well to come away with two wins and at the moment the team's really enjoying it. There's good confidence.
442 - Personally - for you, it's been a big year?
ML - Obviously. Seven months ago I was playing in Melbourne at a state league club so the last few months have been brilliant for me and hopefully it just keeps going.
442 - How do you cope with the fact that all of a sudden you have people all over the world - especially the Asian region - talking about your game? Does it keep you awake at night?
ML - Sometimes I think about it and I'm amazed at how it's all happened. I've had a Socceroos call up and trained with the boys over there. I think about how quickly it's happened and how well it's all worked out for me. Hopefully I can stay injury free - and if I keep doing what I'm doing - and I can go forward even more.
442 - What did Pim say to you when you trained with the Socceroos? Much at all?
ML - I didn't get to speak to him much on a personal basis. He just said I'm doing really well and to keep it up. Just to go out there and do my thing.
442 - How do feel now you have Sergio and Marcos and Adam and the other new boys in the team? Does that help increase confidence for the rest of you?
ML - Oh yeah. Not just that they're great players but they've got great personalities and they're good boys. I guess it brings some more character into the team and their on the field qualities are helping us as well. With Van Dijk playing up front as target man and Marcos creating things in midfield.....they've been great. With Adam, he hasn't had much of a go yet but I'm sure that when he does get his chance he'll take it.
442 - With Marcos and Sergio there does it create a bit more space for you? You've been taking a lot of responsibility on yourself.
ML - We had a problem with our strikers a couple of months ago and I've been playing striker. Obviously that's not my position, I'm more of a winger, so for Serg to come into the team and take that spot has been great for me because now I can play my role. Viddie said I had to play striker because they had no-one else, so I was willing to do that but now Sergio has come and he's great in that position so he can create space and create opportunities for me.
442 - So you still see yourself as a winger?
ML - Yeah. Obviously I learnt a bit about being a striker . It's sort of in my locker now with ideas of what to do in that position but I think I'm a left or right winger to be honest.
442 - What about in a year or two's time? Do you think about being the striker?
ML - Personally I'd like to be a winger. My strengths are my speed and being able to take on and beat players. When you're playing in a strikers role you have to get the ball with your back to the play. I like to be facing the goal and running at players but, to be honest with you, I guess if I was put in the Socceroos and Pim told me to play up front I wouldn't knock it back.
442 - That goal in the game against Shandong when Jamo took the corner and you came screaming in to meet it - was that that just something that happened or was that planned?
ML - No, that's a set piece we've been practising for a while now. We've tried it in a couple of games in the A-League and we haven't pulled it off but we were lucky enough that it worked in that match.
442 - Could you believe you'd found yourself in so much space?
ML - Well that's the idea of the set piece we created. If you see the replay, Robbie Cornthwaite's the player that takes the opposition player away to make the space for me so...I guess with corners and set pieces like that, if the distribution's good, then it's going to work.
