Just how effective can Mat Leckie be at the World Cup? Well a phenomenal performance against Bayern, and his stats against the Bundesliga's best wingers tell an enticing story.
Mat Leckie has shone for Hertha Berlin throughout the season. It was always going to be a jump, from perrennial yoyo club Ingolstadt to Hertha Berlin, a club where mid-table is the barest of essentials.
Yet Leckie's shown he's a top-flight winger.
18 appearances this season for Die Alte Dame, 12 of them starts (he's been struggling to start matches recently due to a thigh complaint and stiff competition) and a world-class performance to nullify Franck Ribery and secure a 0-0 draw with Bayern Munich prove he belongs in the German top flight.
After assisting two goals in his debut for the club in the DFB Pokal, Leckie scored a brace on his league debut against Stuttgart, instantly endearing himself to fans. He also was a strong performer in a disappointing Europa League campaign for the side.
His statistics compared to Bayern's exalted pair are as enticing as they as suprising. The Socceroos flyer outshines Ribery and Robben in goalscoring, striking four times this season from just five attempts.
Meanwhile, Robben has three from 16 and Ribery two from six.
Leckie’s shooting accuracy is also superior at 62.5%, compared to 60% for Ribery and 53.33% for Robben.
Shooting is possibly Leckie's most emphatic, and often derided, aspect. Once a pacey Socceroos forward with Scott McDonald-esque goalmouth nerves, this season Leckie's becoming smarter, more confident and clinical.
With Bert van Marwijk's insistence on pace as a weapon, Socceroos fans will be hoping Leckie can be our talisman at the World Cup.
