Leckie, who played all three Australian matches at the 2018 World Cup, hasn't appeared this season for fourth-placed Hertha due to a knee injury.

The speedy 27-year-old sustained ligament damage in his knee during Hertha's pre-season training camp in July in Austria, after scoring a double in a friendly against FC Liefering.

FTBL understands Hertha had initially hoped Leckie would be fit for their Bundesliga season opener in late August but the problem hasn't recovered as well as expected and the club have taken a cautious approach with him.

Leckie returned to Hertha training a fortnight ago with a view to building up his fitness for selection over two to three weeks.

"It's nice he's back in," Hertha boss Pal Dardai said last week.

"He'll have to do a few extra runs to build up his fitness and then we'll keep looking."

Hertha, who have started the Bundesliga season well, take on leaders and reigning champions Bayern Munich from 4:30am AEST on Saturday.

The fixture may come too soon for Leckie who wasn't part of Hertha's squad which suffered their first defeat of the season in a 3-1 loss at Werder Bremen in midweek.
