Leijer signed a two-year deal with Suwon FC and joined them from Chinese side Chongqing Lifan in February 2016.

The former Melbourne Victory defender’s club was relegated to the K-League Challenge at the end of last season.

Leijer told FourFourTwo his focus is on securing promotion and he isn’t looking beyond his current contract.

“I just want to get through this year and really knuckle down and try and get Suwon FC back into the top flight,” the 30-year old said.

“Beyond that I’m not looking too far ahead, I know what football’s like, I know what Asia’s like.

“I’m just trying to get myself in the best condition possible to have a good season.

“At the end of this season I will see where I’m at and where the family’s at and see what we want to do and make some decisions.

“I’m really looking forward to trying to win again, just to be the best team instead of fighting relegation, which I have done in the past two seasons in Asia.”

Leijer said he enjoyed his first year in Korea after arriving from the Chinese Super League.

“Playing in the K-League was a good league, a good challenge,” he said.

“We were a small club and the smallest club in the competition by a long stretch. We punched above our weight for a lot of the season but unfortunately in the final hurdle we couldn’t stay up.

“It was a mixed season, it was one of good experiences and challenges, and in the end it was disappointing to go down.”

Suwon FC have strengthened with the signing of fellow Australian Bruce Djite.

Leijer admits it is nice to have Djite as a teammate and believes the striker will help the club’s promotion push with the season starting on March 5.

“We want to go straight back up,” the centre back said.

“Bruce is here and we’ve kept three out of the four foreign boys, he’s made a lot of changes in terms of the Korean players, but it will be interesting to see how we all adapt.

“There’s some good teams in the second division. I’m looking forward to having the challenge of winning the league as opposed to avoiding relegation.

“That’s what’s driving me at the moment. We’ll see how the season pans out.”
