Lescott was initially left out by Three Lions manager Roy Hodgson because of a lack of first-team action in Roberto Mancini's side.

But he has been named as a replacement for Tottenham counterpart Michael Dawson, who was substituted at half-time of Spurs' 1-0 defeat to Fulham on Sunday with a hamstring problem.

Spurs midfielder Aaron Lennon has also pulled out of the England squad due to injury.

The 25-year-old missed the Fulham clash and was later ruled out of international duty by Spurs manager Villas-Boas.

"Lennon won't make it," Villas-Boas said. "He has been struggling a lot with injuries.

"We risked him the other day against Inter and he is on the brink of rupturing his muscles so we have decided to take him out of this game. He as groin and hamstring (injuries)."

England play San Marino on Friday before a trip to face Montenegro on Tuesday week.
