EXCLUSIVE: Manchester City’s England international Joleon Lescott has paid tribute to former teammate Kevin Muscat, describing him as pivotal to his burgeoning career over a decade ago.
Speaking at an EA SPORTS FIFA 14 event in Hong Kong on Thursday night, Lescott said Muscat was a key influence when the City defender was coming through at Wolves over a decade ago.
And it left a lasting impression on the powerful centre back.
“I haven’t seen much of the A-League but my first experience of Australian players was Kevin Muscat who was my captain at Wolves,” he told au.fourfourtwo.com.
“Very, very good leader. His passion and his professionalism and the way he conducted himself around the training ground.
“He was always one of the guys who had a joke around the place but you could also have a serious conversation with him.
“Musky was one of those personalities we needed around the club and team and he was a consistent performer on the park.
“He took me under his wing when I was just 16 or 17. He was someone I looked up to a lot at the time. And a few of my friends from that team have gone on to work out in Australia and New Zealand including Steve Corica and Neil Emblen.
“My early experience with Australian players was good and then with Tim [Cahill] at Everton. He’d talk about Australia all the time. He had his own documentary in which we all appeared.
"He’s a creative and genuine guy and I’m sure most Australians would know that.”
Lescott was pleasantly surprised to hear Muscat was making his way in the coaching world as an assistant coach to Ange Postecoglou at Melbourne Victory.
“It doesn’t surprise me at all. You could see at an early age even when I was young I could see he was a natural born leader. And nine times out of ten those natural born leaders go into coaching and management," said the 30-year-old England defender.
Victory attracted over 95,000 on Wednesday night for their friendly with Liverpool at the MCG while Manchester United drew over 83,000 against the A-League All Stars.
Lescott expressed admiration for the “passion” of Australian fans of the EPL and hoped one day the Manchester City brand would be exposed to the fans downunder.
Right now, though, City are in Hong Kong to play in the Barclays Asia Trophy – the only officially sanctioned Premier League tournament outside the UK.
The Sky Blues kicked off their tournament on Wednesday night with a hard fought 1-0 win over South China on a very boggy National Stadium pitch.
Earlier in the night Sunderland defeated Spurs - minus an injured Gareth Bale - 3-1 in a game that was delayed by around 30 minutes due to heavy rain.
The double-header attracted a sell-out crowd of around 40,000, though the Spurs game was overshadowed by an injury to Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen, prompting a furious Spurs coach Andres Villas Boas to describe the pitch as a “extremely poor”.
Lescott played down the state of the pitch but conceded it didn't help the games.
“We know how passionate the fans are here and if we can come and provide them with a bit of entertainment then great but the pitch wasn’t as good as we would’ve liked, which meant it wasn’t as entertaining,” said Lescott.
“There’ll always be injuries in pre-season but we wish Jan all the best for a speedy recovery.”
At the Renaissance Hotel, Lescott joined players from Spurs and Sunderland for a players’ tournament on a pre-Alpha build of FIFA 14 (around 70% complete).
And like many clubs, FIFA is a popular pastime in the City camp.
“It’s a new game [FIFA 14] so you never know who’ll be the best. Dedryck [Boyata] is a good player. Kun [Aguero] is coming later and he’s a good player. We all believe we’re the best. We’ll have to see tonight," said Lescott.
And as predicted by his teammate, Boyata won in the final against Spurs player Tom Carroll.
EA SPORTS, technology sponsor of the Barclays Premier League, put the event on to showcase FIFA 14.
