PERTH Glory will be among those clubs emerging from the darkness as football in Australia's west gives its backing to permanent Daylight Savings in the state.
Football West has today announced its support for the 'Yes' campaign in the upcoming referendum regarding the permanent implementation of Daylight Savings in Western Australia.
Football West encourages and actively promotes the benefits of a healthy and leisurely lifestyle involving sport to its 34,000 registered players and over 150,000 officials, volunteers and spectators of the game.
WA's unique climate provides many wonderful opportunities for people to enjoy healthy outdoor pursuits in the early evening with the extra hour of daylight that comes with daylight saving.
Studies by both the WA Health Department and the Premier's Physical Activity Task Force showed a net increase in physical activity with daylight saving. In a community concerned at falling levels of physical activity and growing obesity, any increased physical activity due to daylight saving is most welcome.
A new initiative of Football West during the three year daylight savings trial was the introduction of beach football at Cottesloe and Scarborough beaches, where over 25 teams enjoyed participation in the mixed team's tournament on Wednesday and Thursday evenings after work.
Additional benefits for teams and players in the traditional outdoor game include the ability to train and play in summer during the evenings without the need for artificial light, at a time when clubs from many different sports are competing for facilities at their local grounds.
YES Campaign Chairman Matt Birney believes it will be the last chance for the current generation of Western Australians to vote on the issue.
"The Daylight Saving referendum on May 16 is the last chance for this generation of West Australians to embrace Daylight Saving," said Birney.
"Daylight Saving is all about families spending quality outdoor time together after work, and helping lock in the future of WA's local businesses."
