New Adelaide United signing Vince Lia has revealed he was his own agent as he brokered a deal with the Reds.
The 32-year-old midfielder had been a free agent for several months after being released by Wellington Phoenix earlier in the off-season.
Lia revealed he got in touch with all A-League clubs personally, notifying them of his availability and enquiring about a potential opportunity.
The veteran, who has played in the A-League with Wellington and Melbourne Victory since the competition’s foundation, ended up “hounding” United general manager of football Ante Kovacevic.
“I emailed all the A-League clubs,” Lia said.
“(I emailed) Adelaide and said ‘if you’re in the market for a midfielder, I know you’ve got a new coach, what are his requirements’.
“’If he’s after a midfielder let me know, I’m available’.
“They emailed back saying ‘can I have a week here and potentially play in a game?’ Which I did and did well enough.”
Lia played in last week’s 4-0 win over Adelaide Comets, although he said despite his age and experience he had no reservations about going on trial.
He also brokered the deal itself, once Adelaide’s interest was clear, insisting an agent wasn’t necessary.
“I did it myself. I’ve had an agent in the past but I think for A-League clubs, I’ve been around long enough for them to know who I am,” Lia said.
“I don’t think there’s any reason to pay an agent to do an A-League deal.”
Lia said he’ll bring leadership to a youthful Reds squad and would be available to play in next week’s FFA Cup clash with Newcastle Jets.
