The Australia coach said it was not a question of pointing fingers at particular groups or individuals but something had to be done to better co-ordinate demands on the surface.

Verbeek joked that he would have been happy to play the game against China at Parramatta Stadium, the Socceroos’ training base this week, but didn’t think there was any chance of squeezing in 75,000 fans.

ANZ Stadium is home to several different clubs and codes and Verbeek says he is just glad there is no real pressure on his team this weekend.

The coach said: “We cannot be happy with the field, it’s clear. Okay there is not so much pressure on our shoulders for Sunday’s game but I think we all, FFA in particular, have to learn from this situation.”

Verbeek said he didn’t want to be in the same boat if it came to playing the last two qualifiers on home soil.

He said: “We all know there has to be more communication between the stadiums, the rugby league and AFL. Because only one thing is important, that we qualify for the World Cup.

“We cannot blame the stadium, the people over there, the rugby. The stadium is beautiful but in the future we have to learn from this situation, that it’s (the surface) not good enough for us normally to play the way we like to play football. It’s just a fact.”

But regardless of pitch concerns, Verbeek said he was not looking for excuses. He said: “Fans want to see us win and they want to be entertained. We will show them that they can be proud of Australian players.”

While the Socceroos and China take part in a dead rubber this weekend, the other group game will determine who joins them in the next stage.

Verbeek feels Qatar’s thumping at the hands of Australia will hinder their chances with Iraq on a roll.

He said: “Personally I think Iraq is the better team. They are playing at home. They are in a winning mood. Qatar are under quite heavy pressure.”
