TOULOUSE lost their 100% record in Ligue 1 this evening as St Etienne recorded a surprise win at the Stade Municipal.
The home side had established a four-point lead at the top after winning each of their opening four matches but former Toulouse midfielder Laurent Batlles struck the only goal to move Les Verts up to third, two points adrift of their opponents.
Toulouse can feel aggrieved after dominating for large spells but they were unable to conjure up an equaliser after Batlles had opened the scoring shortly after the half-hour mark.
Kader Mangane scored an injury-time winner to hand Rennes a 2-1 win over Sochaux.
The visitors found themselves behind in the fourth minute through Kevin Theophile-Catherine's header, but levelled when Damien Perquis netted nine minutes before the break.
That looked to be how it would stay until Mangane tapped home from close range to keep his side in second, a point behind Toulouse.
Montpellier suffered their first defeat of the Ligue 1 season as 10-man Nancy out-fought them and out-thought them.
Djamel Bakar and Bakaye Traore put Nancy 2-0 ahead. Joel Sami was sent off for a 49th-minute professional foul for the visitors and while Marco Estrada pulled a goal back, the equaliser never came.
Auxerre's poor start continued as they conceded an injury-time equaliser at home to Caen.
The home side had been leading for most of the match at the Stade Abbe-Deschamps but a lapse in concentration cost them as Youssef El Arabi struck two minutes into added time to cancel out Benoit Pedretti's opener.
Lille won 4-1 at local rivals Lens, who finished the game with nine men.
Gervinho's 23rd-minute strike handed the visitors the lead and they were handed further impetus with Sebastian Roudet and Issam Jemaa both seeing red either side of half-time.
But, astonishingly, the nine men equalised through Abdoulrazak Boukhari and that was the way it stayed until the final 10 minutes when Pierre-Alain Frau netted twice to add to another from Gervinho.
Lyon were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw as Valenciennes claimed the rewards their efforts warranted.
When Jeremy Pied headed Claude Puel's side in front midway through the first half, they would have been fancied to go on and put the game to bed.
They were unable to take advantage of their second-half chances, though, and defender Gaetan Bong headed a second-half equaliser.
Paris St Germain playmaker Nene proved too hot for Ligue 1 new boys Arles at Parc des Princes with the home side running out 4-0 winners.
Nene played a role in first-half strikes by Guillaume Hoarau and Mamadou Sakho before the Brazilian bagged two goals after the break to ensure an emphatic win for Antoine Kombouare's men.
PSG's second win of the season leaves the capital club safely inside the top 10 after five games, while top-flight life is not getting any easier for Arles and they remain winless - and pointless - at the bottom of the pile.
