The 21-year-old - son of Socceroo Alan Davidson - was selected alongside fellow debutant Ryan McGowan in Australia's 20-man squad to face Scotland in a friendly in Edinburgh tomorrow.

Davidson's form at Dutch Eredivisie club Heracles Almelo caught the eye of Australia coach Holger Osieck, and he is thrilled to be given an opportunity to come into camp.

"It's an absolutely great feeling," the 2009 Victorian Premier League Under 21 player of the year said.

"I just remember when I was on the sofa at home watching these players playing and World Cup qualifiers and 2006 when we made it to the World Cup after how many years.

"It's great to have dinner with them and meet the boys and get on the training field with them.

"I'm looking forward to the next training session and the game on Wednesday."

It has been a long road for the versatile footballer.

From age 14, Davidson spent three years in Japan's development system before returning home to continue his development at VPL side Hume city.

He moved abroad again in 2010 to sign for Portuguese outfit Pacos de Ferreira and made his senior debut against 26-time Portuguese champions FC Porto.

He joined Heracles in December 2011, signing a contract for the rest of the season with an option of a further two.

His performances now have him on track to emulate his famous father Alan.

Davidson Snr earned 79 caps for the Socceroos in a career that saw him play under the iconic Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest at club level.

And Jason says his father has insisted he stay focused on the task at hand.

"Definitely, he is happy," he said. "Firstly he is happy because his son has got his first call up and secondly because he was a footballer as well, especially playing for Australia he is happy I'm following in his footsteps.

"He just said to stay concentrated.

"He knows that I have the ability because if I didn't have the ability I wouldn't have got the call up, so just be confident and stick to my game."

  • Meanwhile bookies say the Socceroos are outsiders to win the friendly, with sportsbet.com.au offering $2.87 for an Australia win and Scotland at $2.50 with a draw at $3.20.
  • And Scotland controversially called up Rangeers midfielder Ian Black to their squad yesterday, just days after coach Craig Levein had ruled out game time for players at the club following their demotion to League Three for going into liquidation.
