JOEL Lindpere scored the only goal as Red Bull New York gained the advantage in the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference play-offs.
Lindpere scored after 55 minutes of the 1-0 win away to San Jose Earthquakes in the semi-final first leg.
In the other semi-final FC Dallas won 2-1 against Real Salt Lake as both sides finished the game with 10 players.
Real took the lead after five minutes through Edgar Espindola but Jeff Cunningham levelled the scores a minute before half-time.
The visitors then had Javier Morales sent off after 69 minutes and Dallas were reduced to 10 men when Atiba Harris was dismissed 15 minutes from the end.
With two minutes to go Eric Avila settled the game in the home side's favour.
