THE Socceroos suffered their first home defeat in a World Cup qualifier for 27 years as they were beaten 1-0 by China at Sydney's ANZ Stadium.

Pim Verbeek's youngsters fell behind as early as the 12th minute and could find no response to Xiang's cracking strike. China missed a chance to double their lead but Zhi fired wide with a retaken penalty.
Australia lacked composure and real quality in the final third and struggled to unlock the visiting defence. Mile Jedinak and Bruce Djite went close but all too often the Socceroos were restricted to long range efforts.
China looked the sharper, slicker outfit and never looked overly troubled.
Pim Verbeek will be happy to be through to the next stage but will no doubt be left with plenty of questions over the performances of his youngsters.
Result: Australia 0 China 1

Mile Jedinak and Bruce Djite both went close but the visitors had that little bit extra to secure the result. A real shame for another big crowd who turned out for this dead rubber.
