Former Socceroo Milicevic, 32, has been a controversial figure in the local game since returning to the A-League to join Melbourne Victory in 2007.

He was understood to have had a dressing room row with then skipper Kevin Muscat which saw him frozen out the side after just two games before joining Newcastle Jets in 2009.

He settled into the side there and became skipper during a 44-game spell in the Hunter before leaving to try his luck back in Europe - where he made his name with Basel and FC Thun - only to end up at South Melbourne for short spell.

After outspoken comments about the local game, he moved to Croatian side Hajduk Split but injuries marred his time there and he returned to Melbourne Knights earlier this year.

He signed for Perth in August - returning after a two year stint at the turn of the century - and appeared set to play a key role in defence, despite frequent recent Facebook updates professing his love for Hajduk.

He stayed behind in Perth at the weekend with a "groin injury" when the side travelled for a friendly against Sydney FC but was expected to be ready for the start of the season next week.

Tonight though, Perth Glory confirmed they had "mutually agreed" to a terminate his contract for him to "pursue other opportunities".

Perth Glory CEO Jason Brewer added: "I’d like to thank Ljubo for his services to the club during the past two months, but it has been decided by mutual consent to allow him to pursue other opportunities.

"On behalf of the club, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish him all the very best for the future."

On his Facebook page earlier today, Milicevic posted an image of Jesus Christ with the caption "Selfie time haha :)" He also updated his location to "Split, Croatia".

He is understood to be flying out to Croatia over the weekend, arriving on Monday.
