EXCLUSIVE: Former Socceroo Ljubo Milicevic has been made vice-captain of Hajduk Split but injury is set to rule him out of his club’s glamour friendly with Barcelona on Saturday.
Milicevic has impressed coach and former Bulgarian star player Krasimir Balakov enough to be officially named vice-captain barely six weeks after arriving at the club from Australia.
The former Socceroo has been given the number five jersey and will be vice-captain to club stalwart and skipper Srdjan Andric.
However a slight calf will likely keep the former Newcastle Jets skipper out of the Barcelona friendly at the Poljud stadium in Split this Saturday.
“I’m really happy here. The fans seem to have taken to me and they have a song about me and chant my name at games.
“I’ll probably miss the Barcelona game but I’m looking forward to the Europa League,” he told au.fourfourtwo.com.
The skilful defender has been joined at Hajduk by another Aussie in youngster Steve Lustica from Gold Coast United.
Saturday’s game is Barcelona’s first of six pre-season games for the reigning UEFA Champions League winners. It also marks Hajduk Split’s centenary celebrations.
Meanwhile Milicevic is hoping his injury clears up in time for Split’s Europa League clash with Stoke City on July 28.
The Croatian side head to the Britannia Stadium for their July 28 clash with the English Premiership club in their first of two legs in their third qualifying round of the Europa League. The two teams then meet in Split on August 4.
If Milicevic plays against City he will join a small number of Aussies who have played both UEFA Champions League and Europa League/UEFA Cup.
Milicevic, a former FC Thun, Young Boys, Jets, Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory player, joined the Croatian club after a brief stint under Eddie Krncevic at South Melbourne in the VPL.
Ironically Milicevic’s replacement in the heart of the Jets defence, Brazilian Tiago, played alongside the 30-year-old during his stint in the Swiss league.
Milicevic added: “Things are going great.”
