Great Britain opened their 2012 Olympics campaign by relinquishing the lead and settling for a 1-1 draw against Senegal.
Craig Bellamy gave the hosts a first-half lead but the African side came into the match in the second period and struck with less than 10 minutes remaining through Moussa Konate.
Team GB came close to regaining their lead late on when second-half substitute Aaron Ramsey picked out Marvin Sordell in the middle of the area but the Bolton man could only hit the bar.
The hosts may well have felt aggrieved by being denied a penalty when Bellamy went down inside the area under a lunging tackle from Ciss with 20 minutes left in the contest.
Meanwhile, Uruguay came from a goal down to beat an impressive UAE side 2-1 in the other Group A clash.
Ismail Matar showed a cool head to give the underdogs a shock lead but a superb free kick from Gaston Ramirez and a fine finish from Nicolas Lodeiro gave Oscar Tabarez's side all three points.
Uruguay play Senegal in their next game on Sunday, while the UAE taken on Great Britain.
