Victory went down 1-0 in a friendly with Newcastle Jets behind closed doors at AAMI Park on Wednesday.

It was their second successive defeat by the same scoreline against A-League opponents after they were also beaten by Brisbane Roar on Saturday, but Victory's coach is entirely unfazed by the losses.

"Absolutely irrelevant," was the verdict Postecoglou offered when asked about the two negative results.

"I thought our football was really good today, I was really happy with it. It shows we're on the right track and I've got no doubt come first round we'll be right.

"It was a good hit-out for the boys. We put some objectives to the boys and it seemed to work well.

"We wanted to make sure we worked really hard, pressing in the front third and see if we could cause some turnover of the ball and we did. We did that quite often. Kosta [Barbarouses] got in behind them, Connor [Pain] got in behind them.

"Nathan Coe only had one save to make right at the end so defensively we were quite sound."

The Jets may have lost marquee centre-forward Emile Heskey for several weeks after he suffered a likely medial knee ligament injury in an innocuous challenge with Victory centre-back Nick Ansell, who was absolved of blame by his coach.

"Nick Ansell's challenge was a bit of an accident, I don't think there was any malice in it," Postecoglou said.

"Like I said to the players at half-time, [we're] just not interested in that," he added, referring to the feisty nature of the contest early on, which belied its status as a friendly.

"I think the boys just concentrated on playing their football."

When pressed for an update on Victory's attempts to secure a marquee signing, Postecoglou said: "We're in the final stages hopefully. You never know until you get it over the line, but I'm pretty hopeful something will happen before the weekend. Get the player in and then we can move from there."
