Perth Glory coach Kenny Lowe has no concerns marquee Diego Castro will go into the season underdone despite only returning to the club this week.
Castro, who won last season’s Johnny Warren Medal, has had an extended break overseas after re-signing with Glory in June following prolonged negotiations.
The Spaniard returned to Perth earlier this week, with just under six weeks until Glory’s Round One clash with Central Coast.
“I’m sure,” Lowe told FourFourTwo when asked if Castro would be ready for Round One. “I think everyone will be ready to go Round One.
“He got in a couple of days ago. He’s got six weeks into the season. We’re looking forward to getting him involved.”
Castro had a slow start to life at Glory last season after commencing training with Perth in early September, before helping the side storm into the finals, with 13 goals in 26 games.
Glory’s 2-0 FFA Cup Round of 16 loss to Sydney FC also means Castro misses out on crucial competitive game-time in the lead-up to the season.
Perth has had issues in the past organizing pre-season friendlies with A-League opposition given their geography and will need to map out a plan following their cup exit.
“We’ll play 11 versus 11 as we normally do, we’ll sort some games out,” Lowe said.
“If you get to the final it’s only two more games. It’s not life or death but obviously we’d have liked to have got there.”
Glory was also without centre-backs Shane Lowry following an arthroscope and Alex Grant, who hurt his ankle on Monday.
“He got injured last night in training so we didn’t want to risk him,” Lowe said.
“We just took a precaution, we didn’t want him to roll it and it turn into something bigger.
“Lowry’s had an operation so we didn’t want those things to bubble over. We take a little bit of care.
“We’ve got five or six weeks leading into the new season, so they’ll be good.”
Meanwhile, Adam Taggart made his Glory debut, his first competitive club appearance in nine months.
Taggart was a half-time substitute and got through 75 minutes as the game went to extra-time, although he needed lengthy treatment on his thigh prior to the additional period.
“We only were going to play him for 45, so we got a little bit more out of him,” Lowe said.
“Hopefully he’s come through okay.”
Rhys Williams, in just his second Glory appearance, impressed with a strong display in central defence as he continues to regain full fitness.
Williams, alongside Dino Djulbic, was covering for Grant and Lowry, but Lowe conceded he hadn’t decided on his best position yet.
“Rhys has got another game under his belt which is really good,” Lowe said.
“He’s a super player and super players can play anywhere.”
The Glory boss was also full of praise for Sydney FC, stating “they’ll do well this year”.
