“Gobsmacked” Perth Glory coach Kenny Lowe has slammed the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system which he says is making a mockery of the game.
Glory lost 2-0 to Sydney FC on Friday night, which Lowe said was a fair result, but he labeled the VAR system as “very ordinary” after a lengthy delay.
Sydney’s first goal came after referee Shaun Evans awarded a penalty for a Joe Mills handball, but there was a four-minute wait until it was taken as he consulted VAR Strebre Delovski.
“Very ordinary. I think we’re making a mockery of a lovely game,” Lowe said.
“It’s crazy. I just don’t understand it. It’s not a great reflection of the game.
“I think this can be better surely. It was sold that it’d be a 60-90 seconds decision and over with.
“Then you have chats with the boys who do it and my perception is not the same as their perception. Is it black or white? Is it a pen or not a pen?
“They said that’s not what we’re looking for. We need a lot of clarity.”
Lowe said the VAR shouldn’t be used for opinion-based decisions.
“I’d rather the ref hone his craft and make a decision,” Lowe said.
“The VAR isn’t a computer, it’s another human making a decision. It’s fallible.
“We’ve already got someone who’s fallible on the pitch, what’s the point of making someone fallible upstairs?
“The guys will make a mistake, everyone get off their backs, but this just compounds it now.”
Lowe also indicated he felt the time it took to make a decision on the penalty proved there was “reasonable doubt” not to give it.
“We’ve got people out there to make a decision, let them make a decision and do the right thing,” he said.
“If it takes that long to make a decision, it’s reasonable doubt.
“If you can do something clinical and it’s black and white, then brilliant.
“If there’s an element of doubt, how can you make a decision and how can it take so long?”
