FRANK Lowy says raising the possibility of Australia losing the bid for the 2022 FIFA World Cup is a realistic assessment but remained buoyant about winning the December 2 vote.
Today, the FFA Chairman told a packed business luncheon hosted by Sydney FC that it’d be a “crushing disappointment” if Australia failed in its bid for the hosting rights.
It was the first time Lowy had spoken about losing in such a public forum and the comments set tongues wagging.
But Lowy said later: “It’s got to be said. I mean, there is a chance that we might lose and if we do then we’re just going to pick up and get on with the job.
“I don’t expect to lose. I’ll expect that we’ll win but it’s a contest and we need to look into reality.
“It’s very important in life that you look into reality and you don’t just count on your dreams.
“I count on my dreams but it’s the first time I said what I said but I think it needs to be said.”
Lowy added that he hoped the FIFA vote would not be delayed due to the uncovering recently of alleged vote buying.
“I couldn’t stand it [being delayed] and it wouldn’t be good for us either. And I fought very hard not to have it delayed,” he said.
Today's luncheon was attended by some of Sydney's most powerful business people including James Packer.
