AIS product Downes, 26, did not make one appearance for the Spireites as they clinched promotion to England's third tier last term due to a long-term knee injury.

The central defender initially sustained a cruciate ligament injury in April 2009 before returning in January 2010 only for the problem to flare up again soon after his comeback.

Downes hasn't played since but has agreed to terms to a new deal with the Spireites.

“Having missed a whole season through injury I am really desperate to get back playing football because that is what I enjoy the most,” Downes told the club's website.

“I want to thank Chesterfield FC for being so supportive and standing by me and I am pleased that I don’t seem to be too far away from getting back and properly involved again.

“Although I was delighted to be presented at the end of the season with the club’s Community Award, I really want to get back in contention for the others awards that are available.”

Downes aiming to be out of rehabilitation in time for pre-season.
