Milos Lujic is hopeful a successful FFA Cup run can further South Melbourne's chances of becoming an A-League team.
Lujic, who was on Wellington Phoenix's radar in 2014, was the hero for South on Wednesday when he found the net in the 94th minute over Edgeworth Eagles in the FFA Cup Round of 32.
The Grade 3 Primary School teacher has been lethal in front on goal once again in the NPL Victoria this season, sitting as the top scorer with 15 goals so far.
His stoppage-time winner against the Eagles sent over 2600 fans wild at Lakeside Stadium and was optimistic that the win would get people talking.
It was fitting as Lujic was part of the South’s freak three-goal comeback win against Dandenong City which got them got into the Round of 32.
“I just saw the net rattling, I knew it was goal but it could’ve easily bounced out as well because there were a lot of numbers in the box,” Lujic said post-match.
“I think we had a lot of corners and they weren’t working for us.
“It was one of those things, you make your own luck I guess and we were a bit unlucky during the game not to get an ordinary goal.
“The last round was a crazy game, now that it was on Fox Sports and everyone is watching us, I hope it sheds good light on the club.
“You look at the facilities and the ground, even some of the Edgeworth players were saying ‘this is a great home ground, you guys are really lucky’.”
Edgeworth were full of attack in the first half and had more clear-cut chances which was a concern to South coach Chris Taylor.
Lujic, however, said they were confident the visitors would run out of petrol.
“It was the intensity they were playing at, they were going at 100 miles per hour in the second half and we were sitting back too much,” he said.
“We were really surprised with them, they came right at us. Chris said to not panic at half-time and we knew they would slow down. That’s exactly what happened, we came right over the top of them.
“It was a game of two halves so our fitness really played a part and we didn’t want to get into extra-time. We wanted to finish the 90 and lucky for us it happened.”
South are currently first in the NPL and will take on Pascoe Vale away this weekend.
