Early strikes from Rob Wielaert and Blaise N'Kufo set the tone, before Luke Wilkshire added a third after the break to give the scoreline a more comprehensive feel.

The result lifts the hosts, who were beaten 1-0 by Getafe in Europe on Thursday, up to fourth in the Eredivisie table, while Twente, with just one point to their name, sit just one place off the bottom.

Twente won the corresponding fixture last season 4-0 and looked well on the way to repeating that feat when Wielaert opened the scoring after just six minutes.

Wilkshire's free-kick sailed over a clutch of defenders in the NEC box and found Wielaert, who headed high into the left corner from five yards out.

It was 2-0 just eight minutes later when the ball broke to N'Kufo after good work from Karim El Ahmadi and the striker finished low from 14 yards.

Twente had strong penalty claims turned down when Orlando Engelaar seemed to receive a shove in the back as he tried to get his head to Jeroen Heubach's cross, before Wilkshire's strike went narrowly over.

Twente keeper Sander Boschker was called into action just after the half-hour mark when he fisted away Brett Holman's strike, while his NEC counterpart Gabor Babos pulled off a fingertip stop from Engelaar's header.

Wilkshire got the goal his performance deserved 13 minutes after the break.

Some fine passing football ended with Stein Huysegems finding the Australian, who struck low past Babos from 12 yards.

The second half failed to match the action of the first, but it did not matter to the hosts who claimed a well-deserved three points.
