The Wolves have signed seven players during the close season and Magath is hoping for a repeat of last season's success, in which they clinched a UEFA Cup berth

"I have always said that we have medium-term and long-term goals and we always said that we want to be involved at the top," Magath told www.bundesliga.de.

"Fifth place last season surely was above expectations. Now we have to prove that wasn't a one-off and a place in the UEFA Cup is definitely the goal once again."

Magath, who came to the Volkswagen-Arena last summer after three seasons at Bayern Munich, brought instant success to the club, securing a spot in Europe for only the second time in Wolfsburg's 63-year history.

The club flirted with relegation in the recent years before his arrival so Magath's stock as one of the Bundesliga's finest managers will surely have been raised by the achievement. However, he believes there is more to come.

"We started a major rebuilding phase last summer after VfL almost got relegated twice. It was necessary to set new sporting goals. That rebuilding phase is not yet completed," Magath said.

"But from year to year we're getting closer to the point when we'll just need a few more signings, always having in mind to continually improve the squad's quality.

Magath, who is renowned for his strict management style, has attracted top players this summer - none more so than Italy internationals Andrea Barzaghli and Cristian Zaccardo.

"These two already have a lot of international experience and the quality we need to establish ourselves in Europe and in the top five or six of the Bundesliga," Magath added.

The Wolves begin their Bundesliga campaign at home to newly-promoted Cologne on August 16.
