The 39-year-old is set to bring a halt to his playing career at the end of the season after 23 years with the Rossoneri.

And the former Italy international hopes he can cap off a glittering career by helping the club to further success.

"I would love to continue living in Milan," Maldini told Sky Italia. "I have always done so in my sporting life and I would like to continue to live in my city.

"So maybe working with Milan, putting my experience at there disposal, I think there's room for many things.

"I think that the experience of an ex-footballer who had the chance to play in the national team, and therefore at the highest level, is something they can profit from.

"At the end I will decide with people I have always worked with. I'll see with president (Silvio) Berlusconi and (vice-president Adriano) Galliani.

"But what I would love is to have an active role and not just a ceremonial one."

Maldini says he is not scared of what the future holds for him at the end of the season.

But the World Cup winner, whose haul of medals also includes seven Serie A titles and five Champions League trophies, admits he will miss the day-to-day life of football.

"It's not that I'm worried," he added. "Because I've been able to enjoy football to the max, but of course I'll have to change my habits.

"So many things that now seem normal to me won't be any more, I will have another type of work but I don't know what yet.

"I will miss the daily routine of training and going through great experiences in a group of 50 people.

"Maybe I'll have a complete breakdown.

"Until now I have always maintained myself well and I think I can succeed in living in a very serene manner because I have had a lot of time to think about it."
