Manzano, who also led the club for a season in 2003-04, signed a one-year deal on Wednesday and at his presentation to the media this afternoon outlined his intention to build a squad of "young, hungry players".

He said: "It will be a strong Atletico Madrid and we will try to play, within our possibilities, good football.

"It will be an Atletico Madrid built around young, hungry players.

"The basic idea is that we will have young players accompanied by some more experienced figures.

"I believe in myself, I believe in my work and I believe in the squad.

"I ask the fans to trust me. I will not cheat or disappoint you."

Atletico finished seventh last season, qualifying as a result for the Europa League, and Manzano is optimistic that position can be improved in 2011-12.

"The starting point is seventh," he said.

"Our responsibility is to elevate that position. But not only do we have to improve in the league but also the other two competitions we are in."

One of Manzano's first tasks will be to cope with the expected departure of Sergio Aguero.

The Argentina forward has expressed his desire to leave Atletico and has been heavily linked with cross-town rivals Real.

Manzano, however, was hopeful Diego Maradona's son-in-law might stay.

He said: "So far the club have not received any official offer for Aguero.

"I would love to add Aguero to a long list of great players I have coached."
