Alvarez was sacked following last night's 2-0 defeat at promoted Hercules - a result that left Sevilla seventh in the Primera Division standings with eight points from five games.

The loss to Hercules was Sevilla's first league reverse of the campaign but the Andalusian club have also suffered major disappointments in the Spanish Supercopa and in Europe over the last month.

In the Supercopa they lost 5-3 on aggregate to Barcelona after leading 3-1 from the first leg, while in the Champions League play-offs they made a surprise exit at the hands of Braga after losing both home and away to the Portuguese side.

That meant Sevilla entered into the Europa League this season, and they got off to a bad start in that competition when they lost 1-0 at home to Paris St Germain in their first group match.

Sevilla play their second Europa League match this Thursday when they travel to Borussia Dortmund.

The man in charge for that game will be the experienced Manzano, who will take charge of his first training session with Sevilla this evening. Sevilla's next league game is at home to Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

Manzano stepped down as coach of Real Mallorca in the summer after leading the Balearic Island club to a fifth-place finish in La Liga last season.

The 54-year-old was in the Mallorca hotseat for seven seasons during two spells, while he has also coached the likes of Atletico, Racing Santander, Real Valladolid and Rayo Valladolid.

Alvarez took charge of Sevilla towards the end of last season following the dismissal of Manolo Jimenez and helped the club win the Copa del Rey and finish fourth in the Primera Division.
