The 22-year-old elected to join Balzan after a successful trial with the Maltese club, which finished second last season.

The move will allow Ascroft the chance to play in Europe, with the ultimate drawcard of Europa League competition, admittedly at a minnow club.

Ascroft is the first Mariners' player to depart the club for Malta after Balzan FC formed a partnership with Paul Okon's side, aimed at developing player pathways for Central Coast footballers.

“I would like to thank Central Coast Mariners for giving me the fantastic opportunity to play in the Hyundai A-League,” Ascroft said. “I would like to wish the boys all the very best for the future and the rest of the season.

“Finally, I would like to say a huge thanks to the fans who have supported me on this journey – you welcomed me with open arms from day one and that’s something I will never forget.

“The opportunity to return to Europe and continue my dream is certainly an exciting one and a new experience for me,” Ascroft said.

Ascroft originally moved to the Mariners after a stellar youth career with Eredivisie side VVV-Venlo, which saw him make seven appearances in the Dutch Jupiler League.

The defender made 34 appearances for the Mariners across two seasons, scoring four goals.
