Out-of-favour Reading keeper Federici has dropped down the pecking order at the Championship side. The NSW South Coast-raised keeper last played for his club on March 10 in a 2-2 draw against Charlton.

Since then, veteran USA keeper Marcus Hahnemann has made the starting XI, including last Saturday's 0-0 draw away to Coventry City.

Federici, 24, trained alongside Schwarzer in the lead up to the Socceroos' 2-0 win over Uzbekistan in a World Cup qualifier last week. And according to the veteran Socceroo keeper, the Olyroo star of  the 2008 Olympics impressed.

"He's a talented boy," said Schwarzer. "Unfortunately he's been left out the last couple of games for Reading.

"He's 24 years old and I've had a lot of discussions with him and it's important for him to start playing regular football.

"He knows that and he wants to."

Reading currently lie third in the Championship behind Wolves and Birmingham. Federici played 10 games on loan at Southend this season and has racked up 17 appearances in all competitions for Reading this season.

Hahnemann would turn 37 next season while Federici will turn 25. It's unclear which way former England winger Coppell will go with choosing his number one and two glovesmen.

And continued good form in the Turkish Super League from Michael Petkovic means Federici is still no certainty as the long-term successor to Schwarzer.

"He's [Federici] is desperate to play regular first team football and he's been unfortunate to be left out at the moment," added Schwarzer.

"If he can play regular first team football then he's got every chance to go on and be a long-serving goalkeeper for the Socceroos."
