Western Sydney Marquee Nicola Martinez believes he can still improve on his performances for the Wanderers.
The Argentinian import formerly of Independiente has been an ever-present figure for the majority of the Wanderers campaign with the midfielder’s skill and endeavour delivering four goals and eight assists.
Western Sydney’s A-League season got off to a slow start but one loss in their last seven games has seen the Wanderers cement themselves in the top six.
And Martinez, who is on loan to Western Sydney from Greek Super League side Olympiakos, said he’s satisfied with his debut A-League campaign but he believes he can do even better.
“I have to prove to myself and my teammates and the coaching stuff that I can give more,” he said speaking exclusively to FourFourTwo.
“Personally, I am very happy. I feel very good at the club and that is because of the staff, players and the fans.
"We’ve had a lot of ups and downs in the team but we have a very good squad and there are always things I can improve upon much more and help the team.
"Whether it is with assists, scoring goals, running, defending, creating - I need to improve.
“I’m working hard throughout the week to do it on the weekend and I’m going to give as much as I can to deliver what the team needs.”
Martinez revealed he began feeling more comfortable with the physicality of the A-League after round eight.
“I started to get fitter,” he said.
“I remember the game with Brisbane we didn’t win but we should’ve won. We played amazing, we had a lot of possession and a lot of shots and chances, against a pretty good team like Brisbane.
“I remember especially after this game understanding from the boss what he wants from me and that I must improve a lot more because the team needed it.
“We are working hard to achieve this because we know that now is the most important part of the season. “
One highlight for Martinez was being involved in the game that ended Sydney FC’s quest for invincible status.
“The experience was amazing,” he said.
“The club hadn’t been winning any derby games in the past years and we knew how important it was for the club.
“What also made it more important was this season Sydney FC are the best team in the league and it wasn’t easy to win.
“I’m grateful because we got the victory due to the support of the fans. They helped and gave us a lot of power and they pushed us to the limit and we put our life on the line in that game.”
Meanwhile Terry Antonis has also hailed his Argentinian teammate’s ability.
“Nico is a great player as you can tell with what he’s already done on the pitch for the Wanderers this season,” he said.
“It’s good to be working, training and playing with him. All of the boys in the team have quality so it’s great to be playing with all of them.”
