Wigan boss Roberto Martinez believes the capture of Victor Moses represents a major statement of intent about the club's ambitions for the future.
Moses, 19, completed his move from Crystal Palace today for an undisclosed fee after signing a three-and-a-half-year contract at the DW Stadium.
The England Under-19 striker had been courted by a number of clubs in the Barclays Premier League and Coca-Cola Championship and there was even rumoured to be interest from Real Madrid.
But it was Wigan - currently 14th in the top flight and just two points above the relegation zone - who won the race for Moses' signature, which Martinez claims offers a clear indication of how the Latics intend to move forward.
"I think it is very important because the player has chosen to come to us," Martinez said.
"He is a very mature young man and he knows exactly what he wants. He wants to know about the future plans for the football club and his role at the club, so for him to choose Wigan Athletic is fantastic news for our fans.
"It shows that we have a short-term aim to stay in the Premier League but a future plan as well.
"He is one of the most talented young footballers that we have got in the British game, so to be able to work with him and have a player that relies on his talent to be effective on the football pitch is very exciting news for Wigan.
"Those players don't appear too often. For us to be able to invest on Victor, I think it is clear, the determination of where we want to be as a football club."
In a statement on Wigan's website, Moses said: "To play in the Premier League is a dream and I want to thank Roberto Martinez and Wigan for giving me the chance to do that.
"I'm sad to leave Palace because they're a great club and gave me my chance in football and I want to say thanks to everyone there.
"But I need to prove myself now at Wigan and I'm going to focus on getting in the team and doing well for my new club."
Wigan take on Notts County in an FA Cup fourth-round replay tomorrow night but Moses will have to wait for his debut as he is cup-tied, having already played for Palace in the competition this season.
The next opportunity is the Latics' trip to Sunderland on Saturday and Martinez confirmed it would not be long before the teenager saw some first-team action with his new club.
He said: "We'll have a look - I want to see him in the group, I want to see him fitness-wise and we will take it from there. But this month, he is going to be involved with us."
Before that Martinez must prepare for the visit of League Two side County, who almost pulled off a giant-killing in the initial match at Meadow Lane after going in at half-time 2-0 up.
Wigan fought to pull the scores back level after the break and Martinez is expecting another feisty cup tie at the DW Stadium tomorrow night.
"You approach the FA Cup knowing that it is a one-off situation," he said.
"You need to be as good as you can be and there is no margin for error.
"All the credit needs to go to Notts County, but the way we reacted in the second half and the way we got back into the game showed a lot of good things on our part.
"We are looking forward to the replay, it's going to be an exciting game.
"It's a unique opportunity for both football clubs to get into the fifth round and it's going to be a typical FA Cup encounter."
