Western Sydney Wanderers marquee Nicolas Martinez admits he’s still not 100 per cent fit despite making his first start for the club on Saturday.
The Argentine started and played 64 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Central Coast and helped set up Brendon Santalab’s second-minute opener.
Martinez was a late arrival for Wanderers' pre-season, joining the club from Greek powerhouse Olympiacos on the final day of the European transfer window in search of first-team football.
The 29-year-old hadn’t played competitively since April during a loan stint with Cypriot club Anorthosis Famagusta.
He made three appearances off the bench, before Saturday’s maiden start with the Wanderers making a typically slow start to the campaign to sit seventh after four games.
And following the off-season exits of Romeo Castelen, Mark Bridge and Dario Vidosic, the Argentine marquee is seen as a key part of Wanderers’ revamped attack.
“After this match I feel like I can do it in this position,” Martinez said.
“I feel comfortable in the running part, physically with the ball and the rhythm.
“In the beginning it was difficult. I’m getting fitter day by day.
“I’m not 100 per cent yet but I’m working to try to be as fast as possible.”
Wanderers expect to vastly improve in attack once Martinez is fully fit and integrated into the system.
Western Sydney has blown leads in the past two matches, drawing 2-2 with Newcastle Jets and 1-1 with the Mariners.
“Sometimes we have to be more patient with the ball and don’t lose it easily,” Martinez said. “Be more compact when we have the ball.”
Next up, Wanderers travel west to face fourth-placed Perth Glory.
“It’s going to be a difficult match, we know,” Martinez said.
“It’s going to be physically strong, so we need to be mentally prepared for this match.”
