Despite this being the Latics' fifth successive season in the top flight the club has undergone major changes in the summer.

The departure of Steve Bruce to Sunderland and the arrival of Martinez at the DW Stadium has seen a significant change of emphasis both on and off the pitch.

Wigan's opening day victory over Aston Villa may have been a false dawn for the club's new era under Martinez after back-to-back defeats to Wolves and Manchester United.

But the Spaniard, ahead of a testing trip to Everton tomorrow, is convinced they will get it right.

"Time and patience is going to be vital in this period," said Martinez, who was furious after the embarrassing midweek 4-1 defeat to Blackpool in the Carling Cup.

"There has been so much football and from the Aston Villa performance to Blackpool we have improved many aspects.

"The results are a completely different situation but overall, slowly, we are fulfilling our potential as a squad.

"There will be a moment where our performances give us the rewards and results that deserves.

"At the moment we need to fulfil our potential in the squad, which is young and a very new group but I can guarantee the hurt in the squad is there after the Blackpool result and the responsibility is something that can be shown against Everton.

"But there has been a big turnaround in players and time and patience is something we need.

"However, we have many characters in that group and they are desperate to put it right and show what they can do.

"My responsibility is now to get the best out of these characters."

Although he is keen to forget the Blackpool debacle Martinez knows every match his team plays can only help them adjust to the new style he has introduced.

He has brought in seven players - six of whom played some part in a much-changed side at Bloomfield Road - over the summer and accepts they have to get up to speed as soon as possible.

"We should be using these situations to adapt quickly. We learned a lot out of it and it will push the squad to the next level," he added.

"We need to find a solution as to why we are not getting results and as a team that is something we need to address.

"Going into Everton we take many things which we showed against Manchester United and Aston Villa and it is important we carry on progressing."

Everton have had their own troubles in the Premier League this season, having lost their opening two matches 6-1 to Arsenal and 1-0 at Burnley last weekend.

However, Martinez is not fooled by those results and is wary of facing the Toffees at Goodison Park.

"What David Moyes has done in his career speaks for itself. He will find solutions very soon," he said.

"Everton have got a group of outstanding players and are well proven as a Premier League team.

"They had a slow start but I watched the game against Burnley and it could have been so different - they missed a penalty and had enough chances in the second half to win the game.

"It is just the start of the season and we should be very aware of their potential.

"I hope on Sunday they are not kick-starting their season in that respect.

"They need to win, we need to win, and we are not the sort of teams who will sit back and be defensively-minded.

"It should be a really open affair."
