ROBERTO Martinez has no intention of easing up even though his Wigan side almost have survival within their grasp.
Wigan took a huge stride towards securing their Barclays Premier League status for another season with a dramatic last-gasp victory over Burnley a week ago.
Hugo Rodallega struck in the third minute of injury time to deflate the struggling Clarets at the DW Stadium.
That gave the Latics a healthy cushion above the relegation zone but Martinez knows the job is not done yet.
"We cannot afford to look at it that way," the Spaniard said.
"We need to make sure we finish the season as strong as we can, carry on with the focus and the attention we showed on Saturday and the good football we have been showing throughout the campaign.
"It is not a matter of trying to do just enough to stay in the Premier League.
"There are still 21 points to go and it would be a big mistake if we take it that way."
Staying up would make Martinez's first season in charge of the club played for in the 1990s a success but he remains frustrated by his team's inconsistency.
Athletic have not won consecutive games all season and squandered a fine opportunity to do so earlier this month as they followed up an impressive defeat of Liverpool by crashing 4-0 at Bolton.
They now have another chance as they make the short trip to Champions League-chasing Manchester City on Monday.
Martinez added: "We need to try to get rid of that inconsistency and if we do that we will get the rewards the team deserves.
"This is a great opportunity to get back-to-back wins and that is how we have to approach it.
"Last week was a great feeling, especially for the fans. These things make you really happy and proud to be part of the football club.
"I am very pleased with the way we coped with the 95 minutes because Burnley were well organised and showed a lot of determination to get a result.
"We all knew how important it was for both teams but the way we controlled it, kept Burnley quiet and the way we grew into the game was very pleasing.
"We showed a maturity that is a little beyond our age in the squad and there were many areas in which we have got great reason to be pleased.
"But that game is over and we need to focus on the next one - Manchester City. It is going to be a completely different challenge."
Wigan are again likely to be without playmaker Charles N'Zogbia as he struggles to overcome a hip muscle injury.
Playing on Monday night, however, may just allow defender Emmerson Boyce the time to overcome groin and back problems.
Martinez said: "It is a little bit of a different week, playing on a Monday, but we have had enough time to flush the bodies and recover well.
"It had been a tough period with four games in 13 days.
"Everyone is really looking forward to the game on Monday and trying to get rid of that inconsistency with a back-to-back wins performance."
