Ivan Ramis gave Wigan the lead with a great volley eight minutes in and James McArthur made it 2-0 two minutes into the second half, meaning James Tomkins' late header was a mere consolation.

Martinez was delighted with the 2-1 win, and was glad to have had plenty of time to prepare his team after the international break.

"Today I was pleased we were able to have time to prepare the team and not an international break. I know they distract everyone but for us they are a disaster," Martinez told Sky Sports.

"Today's performance is a combination of all the good things and we got a complete performance.

"The most pleasing aspect was the manner we dealt with the attacking threat of West Ham.

"You always know they are going to cause problems and I was really pleased with the composure we showed in the last minute to close it out.

"I'm extremely pleased with a well-deserved three points and now is probably the start of our season."

Martinez's West Ham counterpart Sam Allardyce, meanwhile, was disappointed with his side's lack of endeavour at DW Stadium.

"We never got going today," Allardyce said.

"We never got to our level, never passed the ball properly and never stopped Wigan playing.

"It wasn't about Wigan for me today. It was about a lack of our ability to produce what we have got.

"It makes it difficult for us, because if you keep giving the ball back to them they use it well."
