LIVERPOOL midfielder Javier Mascherano has played down reports he is to become the new Argentina captain.
New coach Diego Maradona said this week that he will build his team around Mascherano, but the 23-year-old claims he is not interested in taking on the role of skipper.
"At the moment we have a captain and it is wrong to talk about someone else," Mascherano told TyC Sports television network.
"The new boss has not yet joined the players and in the last few matches it has been (Javier) Zanetti, who gives a lot to the squad with years of experience.
"I am not interested in being captain. I am more focused on going to the next World Cup."
