In their final pre-season friendly before the EPL season begins this week, Brighton went down 3-2 to La Liga side Atleti in an entertaining game.

Ryan looked strong in the first half, making a number of good saves and crucial interceptions, but it was all undone with a poor mistake on the stroke of halftime.

Nicolas Gaitan had a go from distance and the shot was travelling but hit straight at Ryan, however the Aussie keeper saw it slip through his hands and into the net.

Brighton struck back to make it 1-1 before doing the same after Torres gave Atleti the lead, before Lucas Hernandez won it for the Spaniards late on, with Ryan having made a good save to deny Antoine Griezmann just seconds earlier.

While it was a bad mistake by Ryan, his all-round performance in the game and in pre-season should see him start as their number one for the season.

Brighton coach Chris Hughton said: “He would be the one in the whole stadium that feels it the most. He’d made two good saves before that, and overall, if you took that out of the game, he’s had a very good game.

“But that’s what goalkeepers do, they are the last line and even the top goalkeepers will make mistakes. It’s not about the mistakes they make, but how they react from it.

Brighton begin their EPL campaign at home to Manchester City on Sunday morning (AEST).
