Lisa De Vanna opened the scoring for Australia in the 42nd minute via a sublime volley from 25m out notching her 43rd goal for her country.

Superstar Sam Kerr added another in the 67th minute with a lovely back header that looped up and over the Brazilian keeper.

The visitors hit back in the 79th minute through Debinha who who made the most of a nice pass by teammate Cristiane.

Brazil rallied late to give the Australians a scare but it was not enough to ruin a formidable Matildas performance.

De Vanna said the win proved Australia's growing stature within world football.

“To get the result today, we’ve just proven to ourselves that the result in the US wasn’t a one off,” she told Fox Sports.

“They (Brazil) wanted to prove that they’re the team to beat but we executed well and got the result.

“I’ve been in the team 15 years and I’ve never been in a stadium where there have been 20,000 fans shouting for the Matildas. I was holding back tears during the national anthem.”

Kerr said she was just happy to contribute.

“It was just nice to help the team out and it doesn’t matter who scores we are just fighting as a team like we did today,” she said.

“I haven’t scored as many as I would have liked for the Matildas so hopefully the goals can keep coming.

“There was no pressure (coming into today's match) and I kind of take it in my stride and don’t let it get to my head. This team is so great and I feel honoured to be flying the flag for Australia.”
