Tameka Butt scored the only goal of the game as the Matildas secured a 1-0 win over the USWNT in Seattle on Friday (AEST).

The win is one a long time coming for the Matildas, having never previously beaten the US.

In the end the win was deserved, but it did not come without its nervy moments.

The US dominated the opening stages of the first half, but the Matildas worked their way back into the match before Butt opened the scoring on 67 minutes.

But if not for some crucial saves from Lydia Williams, the result would have been a lot different.

The win puts the Matildas top of the group at the Tournament of Nations following Japan and Brazil's 1-1 draw.
